Analyzing Secondary Data
Algoriddim today announced that Spotify will no longer feature inside its djay apps. However, it leaves users of djay – one of two DJ apps that currently features Spotify, and by far the biggest – with an imminent problem (assuming they currently use the Spotify option, of course). Listen to Integration for Everyone on Spotify. Integration isn't just for refugees, it's for everyone. In this podcast, you'll find discussions about innovative integration programs and the role that Germany plays.
To begin, I conducted a rapid research session of secondary sources. I spent a few hours getting a sense of Spotify’s place within the landscape of streaming music providers and gathering enough information to help determine the focus and scope of my research. I identified some key challenges and opportunities and made a list of initial assumptions and questions. From there, I conducted a competitive analysis comparing competitors’ strengths and weaknesses, as well as identifying where opportunities for Spotify to differentiate itself with a social feature might exist.
App Audit
In my research, I found that Millennial’s comprise 72% of Spotify listeners and are also listed as top smartphone users, with a 98% ownership rate. Based on this information, I made the initial assumption that Spotify’s users might prefer to connect and communicate socially through Spotify via the mobile app.
Although extremely familiar with the mobile app, I thought it was important to conduct an app audit. This helped me gain a clear grasp of the app’s architecture, hierarchy and content, which I felt was important to establish before considering how a new feature might integrate within the design.

Provisional Personas
I then created three provisional personas based on key demographics and behavioral traits of Spotify users. These personas helped me frame my interview planning and identify ideal interview subjects.
Conducting Primary Research
Drawing from the list of questions and assumptions I drafted during my secondary research and research plan, I crafted questions to ask participants about their music listening and sharing habits. I interviewed 5 people in person at a local coworking / coffee shop. Participants ranged in age from early 20’s to mid 30's, resided in major US cities, and reported listening to music daily.

Music is a very important part of our gaming experience and now you can easily control music and podcasts on Spotify from the Spotify widget in the Game bar, including play/pause/skip, changing current playback device, and selecting playlists recommended for you by Spotify. You’ll need the Spotify app for Windows installed to take advantage of this new feature, so be sure to get it from the Microsoft Store or Spotify.com.
You can get started in three simple steps:
- Press Win+G to bring up Game bar
- Click on Spotify in the widgets menu
- Sign-in with your Spotify credentials
Want to tweak the volume of that song you just started rockin’ out to? Pull up the audio widget in Game bar to change volume settings across apps quickly and easily without having to alt-tab out of your game.
Gallery and Memes
Currently, you can easily capture and view your gameplay screenshots, then share directly to Twitter without leaving your game.
With today’s update, you can take this a step further by turning your captured screenshots into memes. During your game, hit Win+G to call up Game bar, open the Capture widget in the Game bar menu, and take a screenshot or video. Once captured you can edit your video and add overlay text to your screenshot in the Game bar gallery. When you have your meme ready, share it with the world right away via Twitter.
Friends, Chat, and Mixer
In the new Xbox Social widget, you can now see what your friends are playing, and you can quickly text them, voice chat them, or watch their Mixer stream all from within the Game bar. The same friends list and communication features work on Xbox One as well as within the Xbox App on iOS, Android and of course Windows 10.
